This week’s patient is an amazing duo, Siracha and Oscar the Peregrine Falcons. Both of these patients were admitted separately to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital suffering from spinal injuries. Peregrine falcons are the fastest animal on the planet reaching speeds of 400km/hr when they stoop out of the sky. They love to eat pigeons and likely sustained their injuries by putting the brakes on a little too late when stooping down for dinner! Siracha and Oscar have now recovered from their injuries following months of care in hospital and their long stay has left them a little unfit. We need to ensure they are at optimum fitness before release. To give them their best chance of survival back in the wild they need exercise first and lots of it! Siracha and Oscar have been trained onto a glove so that we can free fly them, a flight enclosure just doesn’t offer them the space they need for this final stage of rehabilitation. Siracha and Oscar are very close to a full recovery and will be diving for pigeons again in the wild before they know it.
