KETK - We've all been there. You need a day off to go do something, so you call in sick... But your boss want's a doctors note. Now, there are dozens of online services offering fake doctor's notes.
I wanted to know how convincing these forgeries really are, so I took one real note and four fake notes to my boss Michael Wesp to see if he could spot the real one. After about fifteen minutes, he guessed right.
But Dr. Wilson of Trinity Mother Francis did not: "These are definitely convincing."
Fake notes are typically signed by "made-up" doctors, but sometimes the notes will have the name of a real physician. And Dr. Ray Wilson says when employers are calling in to check on notes, it takes time away from patient care: "(You) get employers calling asking is this really your name? Is this really your note?"
Even though everyone knows this is frowned upon, Randy Roberts, of Roberts and Roberts Law Firm, says some might not know that this could get you fired" "It's definitely grounds for termination."
You might even end up in trouble with the law. "That's fraud," Roberts says. "You're making up a document to get extra money in your paycheck from your employer."
So while that day off may be worth while, it might not be worth losing your job for.
