KYTX - There's a growing debate in the medical field about whether music in the operating room helps doctors concentrate or is a distraction.
Doctors at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances say music helps them focus while in the cath lab at the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital.
Studies prove that listening to music while working could be productive, and Dr. Sheldon Freeberg of the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital agrees.
"Some of the older doctors, they'll listen to smooth jazz or that type of thing," said Dr. Freeberg. "Some of the younger docs will listen to classic rock or other types of music in the background."
According to doctors, the music in the cath lab is never blaring.
University of Miami studies show those who listen to music at work complete their jobs quicker and are more productive.
"We convinced the hospital that low level music increases productivity, which has been shown with Muzac in work places," said Dr. Freeberg.
He said, "we're still very focused on what's going on and are very aware of every detail."
