The official Team Cap and Team Iron Man posters have been released and besides our giddy nerd smiles, no one looks happy. We have all of the details for you here on Clevver Newsfeed.
With new set reports and posters, we can hardly contain ourselves for Civil War let alone choose a team!
The Civil War promotion machine is running at full steam with only a few weeks left until the mammoth film’s premiere and Marvel has finally released promo posters for each team in the show down. We have Team Cap with Captain America, the Winter Solider, Falcon, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Ant-Man. On the other side of the equation we have Team Iron with their fearless leader joined by Black Panther, Black Widow, Vision, and War Machine. The posters are pretty basic and don’t really tell us anything we didn’t already know. The tagline “Divided We Stand” certainly echoes the theme of the movie, but if there’s one thing really sticking out about the posters, it’s that Team Iron Man is clearly missing a character to make this match-up even numbered – of course we’re referring to Spider-Man and this lack of the Web-Head has us feeling like J Jonah - [1].
But as much as we’d like to complain along with Jameson, there’s not much we can do about it – Marvel has been playing their Spidey cards extremely close to the chest without so much as even a set-leak of the wall crawler. But rumor has it a final trailer will drop this week and maybe then we’ll get a quick glimpse at Tom Holland’s much-anticipated appearance, but don’t get your hopes up.
In conjunction with the team posters being released, several film sites have put out stories from visits to the Civil War set last June and there are quite a few tidbits to be learned. For one thing, directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo mentioned to several sources that where Winter Solider was a political thriller, this outing for Cap and friends would be more of a psychological thriller. For comparison, the brothers offered David Fincher’s Se7en as an example of what they aimed for in terms of twisted character thrills– here’s hoping Pepper Potts’ head doesn’t show up in a box at the end of the film…or here’s hoping it does? Other films the Russo’s compared Civil War to included The Godfather, Fargo, and the styles of Brian de Palma. Those are some seriously high bars set, but we expect nothing less from the brothers who changed the game with Winter Soldier.
Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely had a few things to say about the characters as well for those worried this won’t be a Cap movie, telling Collider, “This is 100% Steve’s story,” continuing on to point out that “if Civil War is the A-plot, then the Bucky story is the B plot.” On the subject of Bucky, the writers noted the Winter Solider would be dealing with the psychological side effects of his time as an assassin amongst other things. And while it seems many folks are keen to take Cap’s side on things, the writers and Robert Downey Jr. are keenly aware that Iron Man can be seen as the antagonist in this story, especially in the comics its based on. But Downey and Markus promise that Iron Man will get proper representation for his motivations and their hope is that fans walk out evenly split on whose side to be on. They also claim to not let the film fall in to too much ideological talk, servicing the fans with plenty of action to even out the political mumbo-jumbo.
All in all, from what we can tell, the Russos are leading Marvel into epic film territory and if Civil War is half as good as the movies they compared it to, let alone on par with Winter Solider, then we’re going to be totally spoiled when Infinity War finally drops. But first, we have to pick a team - whose side are you on? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @ClevverMovies. And click here to see our list 7 Comic Book Movies We Want to be R-Rated.
